about the artist

Aleya Lehmann is a photographer and painter living and working in New York City. Although trained as a painter, she turned more intentionally toward photography around 2016. She completed her MFA in Painting with Honors from American University, Washington, D.C. (1981-1983), a BFA in Painting from Boston University (1975-1979), and was awarded three residencies at the MacDowell Colony in 1985, 1987 and 1992; a Penny McCall Grant in 1989; and an Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) fellowship at the Bronx Museum in 1992-1993.

Exhibitions in which I have participated include: "PHOTOcentric 2013", Garrison Art Center, group show, September 14 - October 10, 2013; “Wheel of Fortune”, Lombard Freid Gallery, group show, December 6 - January 6, 1996; “In Three Dimensions: Women Sculptors of the '90s; Part I:Issues of Gender”, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, group show, July 9 - September17, 1995; “Huma Bhaba, Aleya Saad, Randy Wray,” Lauren Wittels Gallery, group show, April 15 - May 8, 1994; and “Brooklyn '85”, Brooklyn Museum, group show, January 20 - March 4, 1985, among others. Additionally, my work was included in three exhibitions at the Bronx Museum relating to the AIM program. 



More recently, my work was been selected by Henry Yee, Picador, as cover art for the re-issue of Booker Prize winner Hilary Mantel's "Every Day is Mother's Day" and "Vacant Possession." Also, as cover art for the re-issue of Christopher Tilghman's "Mason's Retreat."
